The Mongan Method
This is a wonderful approach for an easier, safer more comfortable birth which makes baby's entrance into the world a pleasant experience.
If you are a couple expecting your first baby, very often you will hear many tales of a painful and traumatic childbirth, from friends, family and work colleagues. You may hear stories of what drugs were needed during labour and how effective the pain relief was, or you hear that a natural birth was planned but ended with medical intervention or a surgical birth.. You may also hear that the birth was completely out of their control and were left very disappointed and they grieved for the birth that they had wished for. The same applies if you are expecting a subsequent baby, you may have been left with a negative perception of birth, and may have a feeling of dread of having to go through it all again.
How does this make you feel?
What visions of birth have these stories and perceptions left you with?
What are your beliefs about birth in general after such negative tales or experiences?
If you could have the birth you want, what would your labour and birth be like?
What do you think your baby would want?
Nature has designed the perfect birthing device which is the uterus,a formation of muscles which are designed to work in harmony to create a miracle of nature, your baby. Labour and birth is a normal physiological function so why does it have to be painful?
If any other muscle in your body worked as hard as the uterus does during labour, would you need drugs to ease the discomfort? The drugs which are commonly used in labour tend to relax the muscles in your body to ease the intensity of the contractions. This means that the muscles in the uterus cannot work as efficiently as they should which may result in your labour being longer, and the contractions slowing down or stopping altogether. The drugs which you accept will cross the placenta to the baby which can leave baby disorientated and with a lowered heart rate. Other affects of drugs may cause problems with baby's breathing and feeding when born.
So why is labour perceived as painful? Think back to how many stories you have heard from other people and what you are told to expect in labour, what emotion are you experiencing? Your mind, belief system and your thought processes determine when and what your body feels, so if it is fear you are experiencing, you are likely to feel tense in your body and mind which creates pain. If you are frightened of labour, you are producing adrenalin (fight or flight)which restricts the blood flow in the body so only the major muscle groups benefit. This means that your uterus and your baby are deprived of oxygen which results in your labour slowing down and baby becoming distressed. This could then result in an instrument or surgical birth. It has been reported that when fear is present, the uterus turns white due to lack of blood supply.
If you have the right education, all of this can be avoided allowing you to be completely relaxed during labour thus allowing you to birth your baby with ease.
If women in different cultures are able to give birth without the need for drugs and in comfort, why are we so different?
Why do women's bodies that are perfectly created to give birth, shut down even before they start labour?
If a woman had the chance to approach the birth of her baby with a positive Mindset, birth can be the most rewarding experience she can ever have. Birth is a celebration of life, and a baby should come into this world in a calm and peaceful environment.
Why HypnoBirthing?
The HypnoBirthing programme is designed to show women and their partners that giving birth is normal, and can be done in the most natural and healthy way possible. You will learn that you can give birth to your baby calmly, without the need for drugs and in complete comfort. You will learn the physiology and philosophy of birth and how mother and baby work together during labour to make it as easy as possible. Birth partners will be encouraged to help and be given useful methods to use during labour and birth. You will also learn how to go into your birthing body and give yourself over to you natural instincts which help to produce your own natural muscle relaxants(endorphins) and a very pleasant experience. This is how nature intended the birth of a baby to be.
HypnoBirthing helps you to create a healthy balance within your mind, body and spirit enabling you to discover just how perfect your body and mind are at working together. You will learn how to send love to your baby in the uterus, offering reassurance and comfort which makes baby feel loved and wanted. Babies have a conscious while they are growing inside you so what baby experiences in the womb will affect him for the rest of his life, so this early bonding is vitally important. Baby will also look forward to being born if he feels wanted and loved by his parents.
The HypnoBirthing programme is not intended to replace your antenatal care by a midwife or Doctor, but it compliments your care during your pregnancy. Many midwives are supportive of the HypnoBirthing programme and you will need to make your midwife aware that you are intending to use everything you have learned during your labour and the birth of your baby.
