Acupressure

What is Acupressure?

Acupressure is an ancient Chinese technique based on the principles of acupuncture; it involves the use of finger pressure (no needles) on specific points along the body. Some points are specific to certain parts of the body whilst others are more general in their effect. Acupressure is a way of accessing and releasing blocked energy centres along the energy meridians of the body that carry Ch’I, the Universal Life Force. The existence of Acupoints points have been proved by Western scientists who have mapped them using electrical devices. Acupressure massage therapy stimulates and activates the body’s own energy to restore balance and help fight illness and promote healing. Acupressure is useful to alleviate many ailments such as tension, stress, aches and pains and to promote a general well being in a person.

What is the purpose of Acupressure?

Acupressure stimulates the body’s own healing powers by removing blockages or disturbances in the body’s energy meridians. This helps promote the removal of toxic build up in the muscles and body tissues that can lead to stiffness and discomfort. This stiffness places abnormal pressures on the nerves, blood and lymph systems which can affect both skeletal and internal organ functions.

How is Acupressure performed?

Acupressure is given in a similar way to traditional massage using many of the same techniques in addition to stimulation of the acupoints. The acupoints are massaged using the fingers or thumbs in a circular motion the pressure is firm but not excessive. A treatment will usually last between 15 and 30 minutes.
